University of Kentucky Holds Groundbreaking for New Agricultural Research Building

People stand with shovels at the UK Agricultural Research Building groundbreaking

The University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment recently broke ground on a $285 million building, a significant milestone in the college's history. This new 263,000-SF facility, dedicated to advancing the agriculture industry, will feature state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, greenhouses, and cutting-edge technology.

The new Agricultural Research Building, designed by BHDP Architecture and Flad Architects, will serve as the college's research hub, housing multiple departments. By uniting plant, soil, animal, and insect research under one roof, the facility will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and stimulate innovative ideas.

The state-of-the-art building will enable faculty and students to focus on advancing their research and knowledge, substantially improving working conditions and scientific capabilities.

Alejandro Medina, Senior Project Manager at BHDP, highlighted the community aspect of the event: "This groundbreaking brought together the entire UK community, including faculty, staff, students, administration members, UK HealthCare, and several Kentucky state legislators. It was truly a community event that celebrated how this project will transform the University and the state as well as have a global impact. Being part of a project with such a profound and direct influence is truly exciting, and it's inspiring to see so many people united for this shared vision."

The building is set to be completed in November 2026.

UK also recently held a groundbreaking for the Martin-Gatton Agricultural Sciences Building, which will become the primary teaching facility, center for student success, and home to new programs. Together, these two facilities are part of the more than $500 million transformation of the college’s infrastructure.
