Celeste Laboratory Study and Renovation
01 Challenge
BHDP was commissioned by The Ohio State University to develop a comprehensive master plan study to renovate Celeste Laboratory, home to the university’s undergraduate department of chemistry and biochemistry. Upon completion of the study, the university decided to move forward with phased renovations.
02 Solution
BHDP designed 10 modern teaching laboratories as well as lab support spaces for student collaboration. Through a collaborative process with the owner, construction manager, and design-assist contractors, the BHDP team was able to achieve the department’s need for teaching space without disrupting other classrooms and labs.

03 Results
Celeste's upgrade has had a significant impact on all students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The labs provide hands-on experience to complement classroom instruction, creating more well-rounded students who will go on to be leaders in science, health and medicine, and engineering. Additionally, benches outside each
laboratory address the need for additional seating before and after classes, and common "soft" spaces allow students to gather organically throughout their day.
