01 Challenge
BHDP was tasked with transforming Ohio University's West Union Street Office Center, a former McBee Company facility from 1920, into the Russ Research Opportunity Center (RROC), a cutting-edge engineering hub. The goal was to repurpose this historic space into a modern, flexible facility supporting the evolving needs of engineering research, collaboration, and innovation. The design needed to accommodate various disciplines while fostering an engaging, adaptable environment for faculty, grad students, and the academic community.
02 Solution
The design team revitalized the building by integrating modern, flexible spaces that promote collaboration, transparency, and adaptability. The layout features open office spaces, shared research areas, and flexible lab spaces, all with abundant natural light and glass walls to foster connectivity. Key design elements include movable furniture, reconfigurable workstations, and centralized support facilities to ensure the space can evolve with the changing needs of research teams.
