Doane Library and Mudd Learning Center Master Plan and Renovation
01 Challenge
Denison University enlisted BHDP to develop a physical master plan that translates the vision, goals, and objectives of Denison University libraries into an inspirational and logical approach for the transformation of the William Howard Doane Library and Mudd Learning Center.
02 Solution
From the master plan, BHPD implemented phased renovations to the 1930’s and 1950’s portions of Doane Library to create a cohesive and timeless design throughout the library. Renovations include upgrades to the original lobby, President’s Room, Reading Room, and new study lounges and collaboration areas.

This opportunity to extend the life of the building also resulted in an improved student experience and positively impacted the faculty, staff, and alums who visit the library. The needs and expectations of 21st-century scholars are met, and students' academic achievements are boosted to even greater heights.
Originally built in 1936, the library was expanded to accommodate the growing stacks in 1957. The Seeley G. Mudd Learning Resources Center was added in 1981, and the unique atrium and learning commons along with it. While these more modern updates were beneficial, they somewhat changed the original design of the library.
Our renovations aimed to “restore some of the historic grandeur lost in the 80s” and better accommodate student's preferences. With these improvements, the library is now more utilized than ever.
The library is the intellectual hub of the campus, both in real and virtual terms.
